Things to Do in San Juan, PR

By  Published Sep 15th, 2016

San Juan is Puerto Rico's largest city. This picturesque Caribbean paradise features cobblestone streets, Spanish architecture, fortresses, and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Whether you are just visiting for a few days or already live here, San Juan has no shortage of great things to offer for everyone.

Museums

Don't forget to stop by the Bacardi museum. This distillery was the home of the Bacardi family's claim to fame: amazing rum. They fled political unrest to make their dreams come true, and the city served as a haven for them for years. It features casks, barrels, and of course the legendary tasting tour. Children can come along too, but aren't allowed to drink the alcohol!

If you are a fan of abstract creativity, look no further than the Walter Otero Museum of Modern Art. It features a variety of selections like sculptures, paintings, music, drawings, and more. The artists are a blend of local Puerto Rican creators and a few from abroad that have received fellowships or sponsorship to show their art. The museum typically charges a small fee, but on certain days it is free.

Parks

El Yunque, if it can be considered a park, is above the rest. It features a jungle and rainforest blend of beautiful trees. It winds with pathways until you finally reach the water. This one is perfect for the whole family.

Attractions

The Plaza de Colon should be a must-see in Puerto Rico. It is a tribute to the explorer Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus) that stands still to this day. With stone architecture and ancient hallways, you'll feel like you got transported back in time to a simpler and more beautiful place.

Other Points of Interest

The Metropolitan Cathedral was built in 1521. As Puerto Rico was occupied by Christians in the early days of settling, there are churches that exist in the country that are older than most homes. This cathedral features spires, stone pillars, and an altar for those interested in cultural reflection. The admission is only $1, so don't miss out on this attraction.

Activities

A Flamenco Beach trip can always liven the spirits of the whole team. It offers beautiful vistas of the ocean, an opportunity to soak up some sun and relax, and other activities like snorkeling for those looking to take a dip.

A segway tour is a great way to cover a lot of ground without spending much energy. Once rare on the island, segways are the motorized scooters that balance themselves and can be found on nearly every corner. You can book a tour through most travel agents, or choose to brave it on your own without guidance.

When it comes to travel or lifestyle in general, it's hard to find a place that has all the features of San Juan. The beauty of the stone, ocean, and vivid cultural life is enough to satisfy even the most experienced person. Consider of all the great elements listed above to get the most out of the wonderful city.
